GMG Energy the rapidly expanding Highland timber products specialist which contributes significantly to the circular economy in the Highlands and the Northern Isles, is set to play a bigger role in Scotland's construction sector.   The Halladale-based business has seen three of its senior employees, including Director Malcolm Morrison, secure visual softwood structural grading credentials which qualifies the company to supply builders and joinery businesses with the stress tested timber used in housing and commercial property construction projects.

Eleven community organisations in the Highlands and Islands have been awarded a total of £1.5m to develop and deliver long-term solutions to tackle poverty based on local priorities and needs The Aspiring Communities Fund, which levers in European Social Funds, was launched by the Scottish Government in 2017 to help reduce poverty and enable inclusive growth in disadvantaged and fragile communities across Scotland.   Regional development agency, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), helped community organisations in the region to apply to this recent round of funding.

A hotel in a remote part of north west Sutherland has enhanced its online marketing and booking systems as part of wider efforts to move to year-round trade and employment.   Kylesku Hotel was awarded up to £16,500 by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) towards the cost of developing its digital systems.

Diageo has been granted planning permission to renovate the Clynelish Distillery visitor experience as part of its £150 million (US$215m) investment in Scotch whisky tourism.   In April this year, Johnnie Walker maker Diageo lodged planning applications to "transform" the visitor experiences at Cardhu and Clynelish.

Contract Awarded To Design Sutherland Spaceport
Architects have been appointed to design the spaceport that is being developed to launch small satellites from the Highlands.   Development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is leading the £17.5m Space Hub Sutherland project, including a £2.5m grant from the UK Space Agency (UKSA).

When a £1M school improvement project got underway at Farr Primary and High schools in Sutherland, nine pupils in primaries 1 to 3 got the chance to roll their sleeves up and have-a-go at painting their new general purpose room.   Councillor John Finlayson, Chair of The Highland Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee said: "I am very pleased that contractor Morgan Sindall has recently completed capital programme works for Highland Council's school improvement programme at Farr in Sutherland.

The Highland Council has invited people in Golspie to attend a public exhibition highlighting results from an ongoing study into the risk of flooding along the Golspie coast, including potential options to mitigate the risk of future coastal flooding in Golspie.   The exhibition on Thursday 31st January from 2-7pm at Golspie Community Centre, 2 Back Rd, Golspie KW10 6RN will present results of the study to date following detailed hydraulic modelling of the coastal flood mechanisms that affect Golspie, and outline potential options being considered to mitigate the risk of future coastal flooding.

The Highland Council is to seek the views of local communities on the future of Achfary Primary School which has been mothballed since the summer of 2012.   Members of the Council's Education, Children and Adult Services Committee have agreed to undertake a public consultation on a proposal to formally close the school.

New online forms on Council's website
Highland Council residents can now apply for Council Tax discounts and exemptions and report change of circumstances online with the launch of new online forms on the Council's website.   The new forms allow customers to complete online rather than by paper when applying for council tax discounts/exemptions and to report changes that may impact on their council tax, housing benefit or council tax reduction.
