Valuable Statue Of Mercury Stolen From Dunrobin Castle, Golspie POLICE in Golspie are appealing for information after a large garden statue was stolen from Dunrobin Castle gardens, the home of Lord Strathnaver of Sutherland.  The statue, which is approx 6ft and weighs approx 440kg, is a high value item, believed to worth somewhere in the region of between twenty to thirty thousand pounds.

As part of the inspectorate's new joined-up strategy for evaluating all of the educational provision of local authorities, separate reports are issued today on the inspection by HMIe of the quality of education at Dornoch Academy and community learning and development (CLD) in the surrounding area.   In a very positive school report, HMIe highlight well behaved and well-motivated pupils, imaginative and well-planned curricular provision, support for vulnerable young people, commitment of all staff and the leadership of the head teacher as particular strengths.

A Dornoch Academy student is heading off around the world to help her studies after winning £4000 of support from the Royal Geographical Society-IBG's Learning and Leading Gap Year Programme.   Seventeen year old Lynn Munro from Spinningdale in Sutherland has been selected to become one of only twelve students across the UK to receive a grant to undertake a geographical themed Gap Year anywhere in the world.  
Older People To Be Treated In the Community In Sutherland
NHS Highland is continuing to develop the range of services it provides in Sutherland so that more people can be treated and cared for in their own homes.   The Cambusavie Unit, at the Lawson Memorial Hospital, in Golspie, was purpose built as a 30 bed long-term facility in 1989, when patients were transferred from the old Cambusavie Hospital.

A new public convenience has opened in Golspie, providing local residents and visitors alike with modern surroundings.   The Highland Council has invested £286,000 in the facility on the Main Street that includes male, female, disabled toilet units and an attendant's store.

As part of the 'Communities Project for Highland Biodiversity,' P4 to P7 pupils from Tongue Primary School in North Sutherland recently (Mon 12th Jan) had fun planting twenty young native trees, complete with deer guards and wooden stakes.   The children worked very hard assisted by Paul Castle the Highland Council Planning and Development Countryside Ranger.

A Victorian hunting lodge in Sutherland is to get a £1.5m facelift to allow a variety of uses including use as luxury accommodation and use for corporate events, thanks to a funding package including Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) together with the Big Lottery Fund.   Community group The Assynt Foundation near Lochinver has been awarded £250,000 by HIE and £785,000 by the Big Lottery Growing Fund Community Assets towards a £1.5 million project to renovate Glencanisp Lodge.

Advanced Local Plan aims for sustainable growth of Sutherland
A new draft of the Local Plan for Sutherland has been published and is currently open for consultation.   The Deposit Draft Local Plan documents - including an accompanying Revised Environmental Report - are available for the public to view at The Highland Council Service Points, Public Libraries and Post Offices in Sutherland throughout the consultation period.

Women appear to be developing a serious taste for careers in the Scotch whisky industry alongside their growing appreciation of fine malts, according to the country's leading whisky producer, Diageo.   In the past 12 months the company, which produces renowned brands such as Johnnie Walker, J&B and Bell's, has received a record number of job applications from women seeking careers at its distilleries.

Sutherland Swimming Pool At Golspie Re-opens After Extensive Refurbishment
Councillor Bill Fernie, Chairman of Education Culture and Sport Committee will officially re-open Sutherland Swimming Pool in Golspie on Saturday 7th June after a £1.2 million refurbishment by The Highland Council's Education, Culture and Sport Service.  The new facility now provides a first class environment for swimming, health and fitness which is fully accessible to all.

The public is being invited to look around the The Highland Council's new flagship office complex in East Sutherland at Drummuie, Golspie, from 1-3 pm on Wednesday 2 April.  The impressive listed building, situated on the southern outskirts of Golspie, has undergone a total refurbishment to provide modern office accommodation for up to 130 administrative and professional staff from a number of Council Services.

Market Development Scheme Worth £9.2 Million In Food And Drink Sales
Highlands and Islands food and drink producers have attributed £9.2 million of new sales to events and exhibitions organised by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), through its UK Market Development programme.   A recent evaluation of the programme commissioned by HIE has demonstrated that bringing together food and drink producers and buyers is an effective way for speciality companies in the Highlands and Islands to do business.

Work began this week on the £3.4 million final phase of upgrading the A 836 North Coast road, between Melvich ~ Strathy, Sutherland.   The Highland Council has awarded a 40-week contract to Highland Quality Construction to build 3.4 kilometres of modern two-lane carriageway at Melvich, which will include two new bridges and environmentally friendly features, such as otter culverts.
