A Sutherland restaurant owner, who has worked in the trade for only two years, has won a prestigious award for demonstrating a high degree of excellence in food hygiene and food safety in the running of her business.

Anne Kane, of The Wayfarer Restaurant, Dunrobin Street, Helmsdale, has won the Food Standards Agency award for excellence ~ EatSafe ~ by operating her premises at a level over and above current legislative requirements.

The EatSafe Award is run in conjunction with the Food Standards Agency and Local Authorities throughout Scotland and aims to promote excellence in food hygiene and food safety management. Eligible food businesses are independently assessed during routine unannounced food hygiene inspections carried out by the local Environmental Health Department. Those businesses which meet the high standards required are invited to apply for this award.

Anne said: "I am fairly new to this line of work. I have worked hard and I am proud of this achievement. It confirms that I am doing things correctly and that the food I am preparing for the public is not only good but is also as safe as possible. Achieving this award provides good motivation for my staff. It means a great deal to us here at the Wayfarer Restaurant."

Andy Hurst, Environmental Health Officer, The Highland Council, said: "EatSafe is an award provided to those premises, which show a high degree of excellence in both food hygiene and food safety. It is always a pleasure to see a business, such as the Wayfarer Restaurant, achieve such high standards, and even more so to show them the recognition that they so richly deserve. This is a prestigious award and I congratulate Anne on her achievement. I would be delighted if other catering establishments were motivated by Anne's success and that they too would put themselves forward to be recognised by achievement of this award."

Note
In 2008 the Wayfarer restaurant closed and was turned inot a Spar shop.
