The Accommodation
This traditional three bedroomed cottage with a living room and small, but well appointed, kitchen and three bedrooms is suitable for about four people.

Location
The cottage, which is within the Kyle of Tongue National Scenic Area, is located approximately four miles from the village of Tongue, 13 miles from Bettyhill and 42 miles from the town of Thurso to the east. Tongue offers two general stores, a petrol station and a post office. Bettyhill has a range of local amenities. Durness and Cape Wrath are about 25 miles to the West.

Wildlife
We have seen basking shark whales, seals and porpoise in the Kyle. Otters play in and around the harbour. Birds and hawks of all species abound in the area. There is a colony of Puffins on the headland further along the coast.

The area is rich in beaches, often deserted, always breathtakingly beautiful. From the dramatic surf of Torrisdale, near Skerry, and the Borgie Inn situated on the River Borgie, to the white sands of Balnakiel past Durness near the Craft settlement, the North Sea governs the land.

Walks
There are walks directly from the front door. To the north the abandoned village of Sleetle, further up the Kyle is a coastal walk with stunning views of the rugged coastline, Scullomie Harbour and Island Nan Rhone much embedded in local folklore, further on again around the coast, opposite the deserted harbour at Skerry there is the magnificent Neave Island. Almost, it seems, within touching distance from Skerry Harbour.

Small boats, put out from Skerry for sea fishing trips, will ferry walkers to the island for a moderate fee.

Walking out of the door south along the Kyle coast brings you to Coldbacki Beach, one of the prettiest, white sand beaches in the north of Sutherland with high sand dunes, mottled rock pools and gently shelving sands.






A few miles inland stands Ben Loyal, the most photographed mountain in Scotland, they say. And a few miles further west Ben Hope, the highest mountain in the region with stunning views from the top.

In the Shadow of Ben Loyal sits The Ben Loyal Hotel a favorite of travelers and locals alike.

Smoo Cave, at Durness, is of great interest and although it has limited accessibility to the casual visitor, is greatly admired and explored by the serious underground explorer.

If you take a trip further west there is a pedestrian ferry at Keolde that gives access across the Kyle of Durness for walkers wishing to visit the lighthouse and cliffs at Cape Wrath. The less physically inclined can make use of the mini bus that runs in the summer months.

Diving
Divers are occasionally seen and the Wreck of the Ashbury, in about 25m of water, is only fifteen minutes by boat from Scullomie Harbour. The majority of diving is scenic with majestic encrusted reefs and boulder dives near by.

Loch Eribol
To the west, some 45 minutes by boat depending on the tide, there are slender, precarious stacks and sea caves at Whiten Head, which is the entrance to Loch Eribol. The words HMS Hood can still be seen on the west side of the loch, constructed in white stone in 1935 by the crew of the Battle Cruiser. There is also a plaque commemorating the Hood at Eribol church overlooking the loch on the east bank of the Durness Road.



In every crag and cranny of the coastline can be heard a whisper of the past, a long forgotten tale….

…….and also the beginnings of a new adventure.
