Highland Council Agrees Funding For Three Projects

24th August 2016

Funding applications totalling £558,000 from the Highland Council's Capital Discretionary Fund have been agreed by Resources Committee, for four local proposals in the Highlands.

£18,000 was awarded to Evanton Community Trust towards the urgent repair and reinstatement of three local footpaths.

£15,000 was awarded to the Highland Museum of Childhood to assist with the cost of restoring Strathpeffer Railway Station Canopy. The Old Railway Station is a Grade B listed Victorian Railway building.

It was also agreed to award £275,000 to the Mallaig and District Swimming Pool. The charity is seeking to refurbish and transform the centre, which is leased from the Council, as a "community hub". The money would also be used to replace the swimming pool plant.

The Committee also agreed in principle to award an application for £250,000 by the Elsie Normington Foundation (ENF), subject to all other funding being in place. This will permit a period of 3 years for the ENF to raise finance to develop the site for a specialised play and respite centre for disabled children. Money will be set aside from the Capital Discretionary Fund dependent on the remaining funding being achieved.

Councillor Bill Fernie, chairman of the Resources committee said,"All of the projects today have been given a boost and we wish them all well for the future. Capital spending is about more than just the actual project and helps our local economies."
