A primary school in the Highlands is looking forward to starting term time with a fresh outlook, thanks to a team from Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission).   The team of nine joined forces with contracting colleagues from Siemens BAM to repaint the nursery wall and sheds at Gledfield Primary School in Ardgay as part of their Be the Difference day, which enables SHE Transmission employees to take a day away from the office to help local projects.

Beachview Lodge Respite Unit Closed As Police Investigation Underway
NHS Highland has suspended its service at Beachview Lodge Respite Unit in Brora from Monday, 9th March, due to staffing pressures and an ongoing investigation by police.   The six-bed home in Muirfield Drive provides short breaks for adults with learning disabilities.

Young people sign up for first Sutherland Junior Warden Scheme
On 22 January 2015 twelve S1 pupils from Golspie High School will be the first in Sutherland to become Junior Wardens as part of a joint project between the school, The Highland Council and High Life Highland.   The Junior Warden Scheme aims to provide an alternative and creative way to engage with young people and community groups, promote positive behaviour and encourage active involvement in the local community.

The success of an apprentice plumber from Dornoch who won the Student of the Year 2013/2014 title for SVQ 3 Domestic Plumbing 2nd Year from Inverness College has been recognised by Highland Councillors.   At the start of the recent Community Services Committee, members learned of Andrew Fraser's success and took the opportunity to congratulate him and pay tribute to the support and training given by council staff.

The Highland Council's Energy and Sustainability team have won the best innovation prize at the annual Energy North Awards which were held in Inverness last week.   The Council has embarked on a project entitled Carbon Saving Capital Works for Council Buildings and Properties, with a specific emphasis on biomass, and in doing so has become an innovative leader in the renewable energy and low carbon sector.  
Opening of community-owned sports pavilion celebrated with Shinty Sixes tournament
A new community-owned sports facility is being formally opened in Sutherland later this week.   The Scourie Sports Pavilion will be opened on Saturday 7 June by Lady Jane Grosvenor followed by the annual Far North Shinty Sixes competition.

As part of their eco-school activities pupils at Melvich Primary School in north Sutherland spent their last day of term on Friday 4 April 2014 taking part in a litter pick around their village.   Many hands make light work so in just a short space of time the young litter pickers were able to fill lots of black bags with discarded items that ranged from crisp packets to glass and plastic bottles.

The environmental improvement works to Helmsdale’s Bridgend Car Park are now complete and the site has been reopened to the public.  These works have been funded through The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service capital programme and are the second phase in a package of works aimed at providing quality public space and visitor reception facilities for Helmsdale.

A ceremony was held today (Monday) to mark completion of the 1km section of the A838 Lairg to Tongue road, north of Laxford Bridge.   The £850k scheme realigned and widened the existing single track road to a modern two-lane standard.

Northern Constabulary Achieves Highest Ever Detection Rate
The first meeting of the new Northern Joint Police Board members heard today that Northern Constabulary achieved the highest ever detection rate by the Force last year and remains one of the highest performing Forces in the UK.   The detection rate stood at 67% (class 1 to 5) by the end of an extremely busy year from April 2011-12 and 4% up on the previous year.

Over the next few weeks new blue recycling wheelie bins are to be delivered to all households in Sutherland, along with details of the new refuse and recycling service.  Households in parts of Sutherland which saw a four-weekly blue bin recycling service introduced in 2009 and so already have the bins, will be delivered new calendars and guides.

Successful Farm Watch scheme is rolled out in Caithness, Sutherland and East Ross.   Northern Constabulary is delighted to announce the roll out of the successful Farm Watch initiative to the Caithness, Sutherland and Ross-shire areas.  
Police - Three Days Of Action Against Uninsured Drivers
Today Northern Constabulary joins Scotland's other Police forces for three days of action, coordinated by the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, to target those who drive without suitable insurance.   The campaign runs from Tuesday April 3 and concludes on Friday April 6, 2012.

Police warning about use of mobile phones whilst driving.   Drivers across the Highlands and Islands are being warned to concentrate on driving and not to use handheld mobile phones or other communication devices behind the wheel.
