The next phase of The Highland Council's on-going programme to check its properties for levels of naturally occurring radon gas is to take place in 34 schools throughout the region commencing in December 2014.   The programme is risk based, with previous testing focused on housing and schools considered to be in higher risk areas.

Highland Council has saved over £476k and cut carbon emissions through reduced business mileage
Highland Council has saved a total of over £476k and cut carbon emissions through reduced business mileage over the past 4 years.   Councillors' total expenses have reduced by 10.1% and the cost of reimbursing employees for mileage has reduced by 15.9%.

Highland Council agrees £164k funding for welfare advice and support
THE Highland Council Resources Committee has approved the use of £163,920 from the Council's Welfare Fund to provide tailored welfare advice clinics across the Highlands, through the CAB network, starting in the New Year, from January 2015 until March 2016.  This includes £3,000 to provide specialist training for CAB workers to provide advice to people with mental ill health.

Planning events coming to East Sutherland
Public consultation events are continuing, where people living and working in Caithness and Sutherland are being encouraged to help influence a new Local Development Plan for the area, known as CaSPlan.   Development Plans set out how places should change and what they could be like in the future.

Community Services event reaches out to Sutherland
People in Sutherland who want to find out more about the range of Community Services provided in their local area by The Highland Council are invited to an open evening event on Tuesday 2 December, 2014 at Brora Primary School from 6.30pm - 8.30pm.   Community Services is a new directorate of The Highland Council that delivers many of the Council's everyday services, with staff in regular contact with the people of the Highlands.

The next meeting of the Sutherland District Health and Social Care Partnership takes place at Drummuie, Golspie on Friday 28 November.   The agenda features a presentation "Learning from Nuka" delivered by Gill McVicar, Director of Operations, NHS Highland.

Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan events coming to Halkirk, Wick and Tongue
People living and working in Caithness and Sutherland are being encouraged to help influence a new Local Development Plan for the area known as CaSPlan.   Upcoming events include: · Halkirk on 25 November at the Ross Institute, Bridge Street; · Wick on 26 November at the Town Hall, Bridge Street; and · Tongue on 27 November at the Village Hall, Kirkiboll.

Police appeal for information following a reported theft of roofing lead from a farm near Dornoch
Police Scotland are appealing for information following a reported theft of three rolls of used roofing lead from a farm near Dornoch.  The incident is belived to have occurred between 15:00 hours on Wednesday 12 November and 15:00 on Thursday 13 November 2014.

Police conducting enquiries into a reported theft of heavy plant equipment in the Sutherland area
As part of ongoing enquiries, Police Scotland is appealing for information regarding a reported theft of heavy plant equipment in the Sutherland area.   Between 14:00 on 31 October 2014 and 09:00 hours 03 November 2014 two excavator buckets were removed from a trailer which was parked adjacent to the A839 at Bridge of Horn near Rogart, Sutherland.

Thurso and Brora public events for CaSPlan
Members of the public are being invited to an event in Thurso to consider the Main Issues Report for a new Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan (CaSPlan).   The first event is in Thurso on 18 November at Caithness Horizons, High Street.

David Stewart MSP backs the Money for Life Challenge and calls on local organisations to get involved
David Stewart, Regional (Scottish Labour) MSP for the Highlands and Islands is encouraging education and training organisations to back Lloyds Banking Group's Money for Life Challenge, a national competition for 16-24 year olds.   As financial education has recently become part of the national curriculum, the Challenge is a complementary way for young people to learn vital money management skills, whilst helping to promote financial education in their community.

Lungworm Warning from SRUC Vets
Farmers are warned to be on their guard for lungworm this year.  SRUC Veterinary Services is reporting that diagnostic submissions to its disease surveillance centres and feedback from farm animal veterinary surgeons across Scotland indicate a high number of recent cases.

SRUC Veterinary Services Launches New Test to Help Prevent Long Bone Deformity of Calves
SRUC's Veterinary Services has launched a new test for measuring levels of the essential trace element manganese in cows to help reduce long bone deformity (congenital chondrodystrophy) of their suckled calves.   Long bone deformity in calves has been linked to manganese deficiency in the mother during pregnancy.

HIAL invests for the future as passenger numbers reach all time high
Passenger numbers at regional airport operator HIAL climbed to their highest ever level in the latest financial year, as the group stepped up its investment for the future.   The company's annual report and accounts for the year 2013/14 show that almost 70,000 extra passengers used the group's 11 airports during the year.

New Trading Standards Institute chairman appointed
Mark McGinty, a Highland Council Trading Standards Team Leader has been announced as the new Chairman of the Trading Standards Institute (TSI).   Spending 22 years in local authority trading standards, Mark began his career in the Lothian region as a trainee assistant enforcement officer following brief spells as a student in the Fife and Tayside regions.

Setting the direction for the future of Caithness and Sutherland
Highland Councillors have given the go ahead for a major public consultation to help prepare a new 20 year Local Development Plan for the Caithness and Sutherland area, to be known as CaSPlan.   The Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee agreed the Main Issues Report which will be the first formal stage of preparing the new CaSPlan.

Minimum wage increase for agricultural workers
A rise in the minimum wage rate for agricultural workers has been confirmed by the Scottish Agricultural Wages Board (SAWB).   The wage rates agreed by the Wages Board on August 20, 2014 were in line with those announced at the SAWB's negotiation meeting held in May.
