Town Centre Fund projects agreed at Sutherland County Committee
Members at a special meeting of Sutherland County Committee this week (14 December) agreed on projects to receive funding from the Town Centre Fund for investment in Brora, Golspie and Dornoch.   Earlier this month (4 November) the Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee announced that extra funding has been made available from The Scottish Government to boost town centres across the region.

Council reminder that all civic Hogmanay events are cancelled
The Highland council is reminding people that the Red Hot Highland Fling at Hogmanay event in Inverness will not be taking place this year.   It, like all other Christmas and New Year-themed civic events including the Winter Wonderland at Whin Park and the Christmas lights switch-on parade, has been cancelled due to the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Footway Improvements on the A9 At Brora
4TH GENERATION TERM CONTRACT FOR MANAGEMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SCOTTISH TRUNK ROAD NETWORK - NORTH WEST UNIT A9 BRORA FOOTWAY IMPROVEMENTS.   INFORMATION BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will be undertaking essential footway improvements at various locations, adjacent to the A9 Trunk Road, between Dudgeon Park Road and Harbour Road in Brora.

Digital Directory Serves Up Innovative Traveltech Solutions To Scotland's Tourism Smes
A new digital directory of more than 100 traveltech businesses and 30 industry case studies goes live today (Friday 4 December 2020).   Developed by the Traveltech for Scotland cluster, it showcases how various technologies such as online ticketing, smartphone apps and social distancing solutions can help tourism businesses in Scotland adapt and diversify in a post-COVID-19 world.

Scotgrad Graduate Placement Welcomed To The Spirit Of The Highlands Project
The Leader of the Council and Provost of Inverness today welcomed recent history graduate Sophie Gartshore to her role of Data Curation Graduate Placement in the Spirit of the Highlands project team.   Sophie was attending her first virtual meeting of the Spirit of the Highlands Delivery Group, a group co-chaired by Cabinet Secretary for Rural Economy and Tourism Fergus Ewing and Cllr Helen Carmichael, Provost of Inverness and Area.

Council's Role In Realising Green Hydrogen Potential In Highland
Discussions have taken place this week on what the Council's role in respect of the emerging hydrogen economy should be and how best to advance hydrogen opportunities across the Highlands.   The Leader of The Highland Council met with representatives from Scottish Power to focus on hydrogen generation and this was followed by a meeting, arranged with officers from across Council services, that included a presentation by Fiona Landy from the Hydrogen Accelerator.

Jobs Boost As Scottish Enterprise Unlocks £0.5 Billion Of Economic Investment
Scottish Enterprise (SE) today announced plans to approve large grant funding for up to 160 new company projects before the end of the financial year.   Together, these projects have the potential to unlock up to £0.5 billion of investment by businesses into Scotland's economy, creating or safeguarding more than 9,000 jobs.

£3.6 million boost for 29 community groups from the Scottish Land Fund
Multiple projects across Scotland have received funding in the latest round of grants from the Scottish Land Fund.  The money will allow groups from both urban and rural areas to take ownership of local assets and put them to use for the benefit of their local communities.

Guidance For Students Returning Home
Plans for mass testing of asymptomatic students.   Students travelling home at the end of term will be able to take voluntary coronavirus (COVID-19) tests through their college or university from next Monday.

Council To Consult On Management Rules For Burial Grounds And Inverness Crematorium
The Highland Council is to consult on draft management rules for its 268 burial grounds across the region and crematorium located at Kilvean in Inverness.   The Council has a statutory duty to manage burials, oversee memorial safety and cremations for around 1500 burials and 1200 cremations each year.

Expressions Of Interest Invited For New Highland Coastal Communities Fund - Sutherland Awarded £700,407
The Council is inviting communities to come forward with expressions of interest for projects that, if successful, could receive a share of funding aimed at supporting coastal communities throughout Highland.   The Highland Coastal Communities Fund has been set up by the Council following an allocation of over £3 million from the Scottish Government of Crown Estates revenue funding.

Will People Living In Remote And Rural Highlands & Islands Will Have Full Access To The Covid-19 Vaccine?
Rhoda Grant MSP raised concerns in Parliament yesterday (Thursday 19TH November 2020) that people in remote and rural Highlands & Islands will have less access to the Covid-19 vaccine when it becomes available.   Speaking to the chamber and addressing the Cabinet Secretary Jeane Freeman, Mrs Grant said: "The cabinet secretary will be aware that many of my constituents cannot access Covid-19 testing simply because of where they live.

2 Hours Free Parking At Inverness Rose Street Multi-storey Car Park
In a bid to support Christmas shoppers and the recovery of Inverness city centre - users of Highland Council's Rose Street multi-story car park are to benefit from up to 2 hours free parking pending final officer approval under delegated powers.   Provost of Inverness and Area Cllr Helen Carmichael said: "I am very pleased that Members of the City of Inverness Area Committee have agreed to a new range of parking tariffs that are designed to increase footfall to the city centre; to help recovery from the impact of coronavirus; and to support retail business in the run-up to the festive season.

A new useful guide has been produced to provide people across the Highlands with information and advice on the financial and other support that is available to them.   The Highland Council, along with NHS Highland Public Health, Independent Food Aid Network and the Trussell Trust, have brought a wide range of relevant financial advice and support with contact details together in a user-friendly format aimed at people who are struggling to make ends meet.

The number of CCTV Cameras in the UK may be as many as 5.2 million, with 1 camera for every 13 people as the popularity of public surveillance, home CCTV and doorbell camera use increases.  96% of the total number of cameras in the UK are now operated by private businesses and homeowners.

National Award Success For Highland Apprentice
A technician with The Highland Council's Infrastructure and Environment service has been awarded the accolade of becoming Highways and Street Lighting Apprentice of the Year Finalist at the Association for Public Service Excellence Awards.   Ewan Gordon, who is based at the Drummuie Council Offices in Golspie, started his career with the Council as a trainee technician in October 2017, a few months after completing high school.
