Science Skills Academy Progress Welcomed By Councillors

The Highland Council welcomes the findings published by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) that 16 beaches designated for bathing across the Highlands and Islands have met strict environmental standards for water quality.   The results for designated bathing beaches across the Highlands and Islands show 8 classed as excellent, 4 good and 4 falling into the sufficient category.

Highlands And Islands Businesses Moving To New Technologies
Use of social media and mobile technology is on the increase by Highlands and Islands businesses, according to the region's second Digital Economy Business Survey (DEBS) released today.   Share The findings of the survey carried out by Ipsos MORI, were launched by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) during the week-long DataFest18 Fringe event being held in Inverness for businesses and the wider community for the first time.

Help is available to reduce Council Tax charges
The Highland Council is advising low income households, including home-owners, to apply for help to reduce their Council Tax.  Eligible households can receive up to 100% reduction from their Council Tax which means that those households who receive the full reduction will only have to pay their Scottish Water and Wastewater charges.

Highland Child Protection Toolkit launched
The Highland Child Protection Committee has launched a Toolkit to assist individuals, volunteers and community groups working with children and young people understand their roles and responsibilities in relation to child protection.   Over 60 people providing activities for children, young people and families in a paid and voluntary capacity came along to the launch event in Inverness yesterday.

Annual business turnover in rural areas could grow by at least £1.44 billion across Scotland, with rural microbusiness and small-sized business seeing the greatest returns.   Unlocking the digital potential of rural areas in Scotland could add between £1.2bn and £2.5bn annually in Gross Value Added (GVA) to Scotland's rural economy and at least £1.44bn to rural business turnover, according to a new report commissioned by Amazon and published today by Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) and Rural England.

Scottish farmers are being advised to take steps and plan fodder usage now, with experts predicting a late spring.   Using data from grass variety trials, specialists from SAC Consulting, part of Scotland's Rural College (SRUC), predict that T-Sum 200 - which indicates when soils have warmed sufficiently for grass growth to begin - will be two-to-three weeks later than normal.

Around £700,000 will be spent on work to help address the range of pressures related to the decline of Scottish wild salmon stocks.   The support will include £500,000 for research and activities, and includes a new national programme of local sampling which will help to count the numbers of juvenile salmon in rivers, before they leave to become adults at sea and return, and monitor their abundance.
