Public opinion sought on Golspie Flood Protection Study
The Highland Council has invited people in Golspie to attend a public exhibition highlighting results from an ongoing study into the risk of flooding along the Golspie coast, including potential options to mitigate the risk of future coastal flooding in Golspie. The exhibition on Thursday 31st January from 2-7pm at Golspie Community Centre, 2 Back Rd, Golspie KW10 6RN will present results of the study to date following detailed hydraulic modelling of the coastal flood mechanisms that affect Golspie, and outline potential options being considered to mitigate the risk of future coastal flooding.11/12/2018
Melvich Primary School Reaps the Benefits of New Campus
The Vice Chair of The Highland Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee has congratulated Melvich Primary School near Thurso on their inspection report by Education Scotland. Councillor John Finlayson said: "I would like to extend my congratulations to the Head Teacher Katherine Wood and her staff and all the pupils as well as the whole school community on what is a very positive outcome for them all." In its inspection report published on Tuesday, 4 December 2018, Education Scotland made reference to a number of Melvich Primary School's strengths.6/12/2018
Lorna Simpson is named Participation Officer of the Year
A Highland Council employee, nominated by the tenants she works with, has scooped a national award. Lorna Simpson from Wick has been a Tenant Participation Officer with The Highland Council for the past ten years, covering Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.28/11/2018
Another Moray Firth Wind Farm Gets Go Ahead
A proposed objection to a massive Moray Firth wind project by Highland Council did not take place as planned. Highland council planning officers had intimated that the council would lay an objection to the north planning applications committee and it was stated in the papers the week before but the objection was not put.20/11/2018

Over £300,000 Flag Funding Still Available In Highland & Moray Fishing Communities
Businesses and organisations are being encouraged to apply for funding through the Highland & Moray Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) as part of the European Maritime & Fisheries Fund. Funding can be used to support a wide range of projects that will boost the local economy and create jobs within the fishing, aquaculture and maritime industries including tourism and seafood sectors.19/11/2018
Funding for new Dornoch Development Officer approved
Sutherland County Committee members gave their backing to Dornoch Area Community Interest Company's (DACICA) proposal to create a Community Development Manager Post. DACIC was set up in 2007 as a voluntary organisation to enhance and develop the economy and community of the Sutherland town.19/11/2018
Funding for improving Sutherland homes
Members of the Sutherland County Committee have agreed a two year Housing Revenue Account Capital Programme that will see over £2m invested into improving council homes over the next 2 years. In addition, a further £134,000 will be spent specifically on providing aids and adaptations to assist tenants requiring extra support.19/11/2018
Winter maintenance plan approved for Sutherland roads
The priorities by which The Highland Council will grit roads across Sutherland this winter have been approved by Councillors. Twenty three gritters and 4 footpath tractors all with dedicated routes are on standby to treat a road network of 534km primary routes (40%), 248km of secondary routes (19%) and 554km of other routes (41%) in the area.15/11/2018
New Chair for Sutherland Committee
Councillor Richard Gale who represents the East Sutherland and Edderton ward of The Highland Council has taken over the reins of the Sutherland County Committee. Crofters Vote IN Favour Of Working With HIE ON Plans For UKs First Spaceport
Plans to establish the UK's first spaceport in north-west Sutherland have taken a major step forward. Melness Crofters Estate (MCE), who own the prospective launch site for small satellites, on the Moine near Tongue, have confirmed their intention to work with development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) towards agreeing heads of terms.26/10/2018

Trade Unions Recommend Reject Vote On Revised Local Government Pay Offer
Local services throughout Scotland could be plunged into crisis after - UNISON, Unite and the GMB - wrote to COSLA to say they will recommend their members reject their revised pay offer when they consult them in the coming weeks. The revised pay offer, made by COSLA on 6th September 2018, was a 3% increase for all local government workers earning up to £80,000, but the trade unions are angry that this is below inflation and does not improve low pay.17/9/2018
Algal toxins affecting shellfish in coastal waters in the North West Sutherland - Loch Eriboll and Kyle of Durness
The Highland Council's Environmental Health team has identified raised levels of naturally occurring algal toxins following routine monitoring at Loch Eriboll and Kyle of Durness. Eating shellfish such as cockles, mussels, oysters or razor fish from these areas may pose a health risk arising from the consumption of these algal toxins.22/8/2018
Council to consult on closure of Altnaharra Primary School
Members of The Highland Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee have agreed for the Council to conduct a statutory consultation on a proposal to discontinue the provision of education at Altnaharra Primary School and to formally close the school. In a report to committee, Councillors were informed that the school has been mothballed since February 2017 and that there are no prospective pupils in the foreseeable future, and no long term prospect of the school having a viable roll.22/8/2018
