A new web site created by Navertech for Lonie & Janet Mackintosh to advertise their self catering cottage at Achrimsdale near Brora has added a simple facitlity to check availability and make a booking online for some of their accommodation packages.   The chalet, which sleeps up to six, is set in a beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth with views as far as the Cairngorms.

Latest Windfarm Determinations in Sutherland
Highland Councillors on Friday, 29 September 2006 determined three applications for the erection of windfarm developments in Sutherland.   Meeting at Lairg Community Centre following site visits the previous day, the Planning Development Europe and Tourism Committee considered applications by: ~ SSE Generation Ltd for 23 turbines generating 46 Mega Watts of electricity at Achany Estate Lairg; ~ Airtricity Developments UK for 23 turbines at Invercassley (Beinn Rosail), Strath Oykel; and ~ E.on UK Renewables Ltd for 19 turbines at Rosehall Hill Forest, Rosehall.

The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 - Comes Into Force On 1 October 2006
On October 1 2006, new laws will come into force to protect workers from age discrimination.  The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations will make it illegal for employers to discriminate against employees, trainees or job seekers because of their age and ensure that all workers, regardless of age, have the same rights in terms of training and promotion.

SUMMARY The August 2006 unemployment figures were released on 13th September 2006.  During the month, July 2006 to August 2006, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Great Britain fell by 0.3%, from 932,191 to 929,498 (2,693 claimants).

An E-learning system developed by The Highland Council to train staff on Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit fraud awareness is such a success that it is now being used by 270 other local authorities across the UK.   The training package entitled "Focus on Fraud Awareness" makes the process of delivering quality training to a large number of front-line staff spread across a large geographical area both effective and efficient.

Council Introduces New Taxi Tariffs.
The Highland Council's TEC Services has approved increased taxi fares following consultation with the trade and public and these will take effect from Monday 18 September.  The Council undertook a review of the maximum level of charges for the hire of taxis or private hires cars fitted with taxi meters in accordance with the requirements of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.

Work Starts on New Sutherland Office Complex
Work begins on Monday (21 August) on a major project which will bring The Highland Council's 110 administrative and professional staff from the five current locations across East Sutherland into the one building at Drummuie, just south of Golspie.   The Council is refurbishing the former technical studies wing of Golspie High School - an impressive listed building which dates back to 1903 - over the next 62 weeks to provide the Council with a modern new office with 100 car parking spaces.
