Businesses Asked To be Wary Of Book Selling Scam For Local Schools
Head Teachers in Caithness are concerned that local businesses may be approached to sponsor books.   The schools know nothing about these approaches by a company selling the books.

Five teams of talented young entrepreneurs from schools in the Highlands have impressed judges from some of the country's leading businesses this week to make it through to the final stage of the ICT Youth Challenge.   Sixteen teams of budding young entrepreneurs travelled to the Horizon Scotland, Forres on Tuesday this week where they pitched their ideas for the information communication and technology products of the future.

Work began this week on the £3.4 million final phase of upgrading the A 836 North Coast road, between Melvich ~ Strathy, Sutherland.   The Highland Council has awarded a 40-week contract to Highland Quality Construction to build 3.4 kilometres of modern two-lane carriageway at Melvich, which will include two new bridges and environmentally friendly features, such as otter culverts.

A replica of the 30 foot bronze statue commemorating the Highland Clearances is being cast and shipped to the Canadian City of Winnipeg.   'The Emigrants' memorial in the Sutherland town of Helmsdale was originally cast by Highland foundry Black Isle Bronze in 2003.

The National Business Awards for Scotland recognises and rewards excellence, innovation and success.  Uniquely open to organisations of all sizes and from any industry sector - public or private, companies from around the Sutherland area are now being invited to take part in this year's competition.

NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR DORNOCH
A new initiative in Dornoch will be launched on Monday 2 April when customers will be able to access The Highland Council front line services, Sheriff Court services and Tourist Information services from the one building.   The new Partnership sees the Council's current Dornoch Service Point relocating to the centre of Dornoch to serve its customers from the Sheriff Court building.  
Challenge gives pupils taste for careers in food industry
Dornoch Academy pupils have been given a taste of running their own business over the past few weeks, by creating a new ice cream.   The pupils have been working with Harry Gow and Highland Fine Cheeses on a Food and Drink School's Challenge, which culminates in a final event on Saturday 15 March for 12 S3 pupils from the school.

A new internet-based guide, accessible via the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) website for people who trade online is being launched this week.   It outlines the rules for people who trade online for a profit, as opposed to others who are just clearing low value items from the attic.

Enterprising Britain 2007 Competition
The search is on to find Scotland's enterprise champions, with the launch of the DTI's Enterprising Britain 2007 competition today.  This year's competition was launched by Industry and Regions Minister Margaret Hodge and took place in West Kilbride, the winner of last year's hotly contested competition.

Highlands Set For Faroese Tourism Boost
A joint marketing campaign between The Highland Council and VisitScotland could see between 5 - 6,000 cruise passengers from Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Norway visiting the North of Scotland and generating around £2.5 million to the Highland economy.   Faroese ferry operators, Smyril Line, have just launched their 2007 brochure featuring holiday packages to the Scottish Highlands.

A company who polluted a watercourse killing fish and invertebrates after spreading waste illegally has been fined £2,000.   At Dornoch Sheriff Court today (Monday 29 January) EMAC Recycling Ltd admitted spreading wood processing effluent from an MDF manufacturing process on fields not authorised for this activity at Clashmugach, Clashmore, Dornoch.

New Apprenticeship For Local Food Growers - A Great Opportunity
