EDINBURGH SERVICES FACE MELTDOWN AS UNISON FEARS OVER 3,000 JOB LOSSES AND PRIVATISATION
UNISON fears that over 3,000 jobs - one in every six Edinburgh council staff and three times as many jobs as first thought- will be slashed as the effects of accelerated budget cuts become clear.  This will put the council's and the Scottish Government's no compulsory redundancy pledge at risk.

Sutherland Station Restoration a "Shining Example" of Far North Line Potential
Highland (Scottish Labour) MSP, Rhoda Grant is hailing Helmsdale station as a "shining example" of the potential to improve stations and the passenger experience along the length of the far north line connecting Caithness, Sutherland and Ross with the Highland capital.   Last month Helmsdale Station Community Interest Company, set up in 2009 to rescue and restore the listed station building at Helmsdale as a community project announced that volunteers behind the renovation had been shortlisted for an award under the caring and protecting category at the inaugural Scottish Heritage Angel Awards, to take place in Edinburgh on the 28th September, funded by the Andrew Llyod Webber Foundation.

Next Sutherland District Health and Social Care Partnership Meeting
The next meeting of the Sutherland District Partnership will take place next Friday (28 August 2015) at the Highland Council Offices, Drummuie, Golspie.  The meeting, which is open to the public, will start at 11.00am.

New online forms on Council's website
Highland Council residents can now apply for Council Tax discounts and exemptions and report change of circumstances online with the launch of new online forms on the Council's website.   The new forms allow customers to complete online rather than by paper when applying for council tax discounts/exemptions and to report changes that may impact on their council tax, housing benefit or council tax reduction.

Grant outraged at lack of empathy with north energy prices
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, is outraged at a response from Minister of State, Andrea Leadsom MP, in which she not only gives little detail on progress being made on the Lewis interconnector but she also appears unwilling to look at national pricing for electricity network charges.   Mrs Grant and her colleague, David Stewart MSP, had written to Amber Rudd MP, the new Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, last month about the Western Isles link and asked her to address the matter of the 2p surcharge on electricity which Highlands and Islands customers are charged for their network.

A primary school in the Highlands is looking forward to starting term time with a fresh outlook, thanks to a team from Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission).   The team of nine joined forces with contracting colleagues from Siemens BAM to repaint the nursery wall and sheds at Gledfield Primary School in Ardgay as part of their Be the Difference day, which enables SHE Transmission employees to take a day away from the office to help local projects.

Social enterprise boosts equality and economy, summit told
Social enterprises in the Highlands and Islands are helping Scotland tackle social issues, promote equality and achieve economic growth, a major summit on the sector heard today (Wednesday 10 June).   Social enterprises trade like any other business, but at their heart they have a social purpose; trading for social, community and environmental benefits and reinvesting their profits to deliver their social purpose.

Taxi fare review in Highland
The public is being asked for its views on proposals by The Highland Council to review the maximum level of charges for the hire of taxis or private hire cars fitted with taxi meters operating under licence of The Highland Council.   The Council has a statutory duty in terms of Section 17 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 to review its scales for the fares and other taxi related charges every 18 months.

COLD CALL CONTROL ZONE COMMUNITY TOOLKIT LAUNCHES ON HIGHLAND COUNCIL WEBSITE
The Highland Council will launch their Cold Call Control Zone Community Toolkit tomorrow in a bid to help communities protect themselves from doorstep crime.  The resource has been created by Highland Council Trading Standards.

Concern Over Safe Rent Deposit Levels in Highlands - David Stewart MSP
Highland MSP, David Stewart has expressed his "deep concern" over low levels of private rented sector deposits that are registered with a Tenancy Deposit Scheme, which is required under legislation, in the Highlands.   Figures revealed by SafeDeposits Scotland who take on average 60% of the Tenancy Deposit Market show that only 61% of landlords across Scotland are complying with legislation which requires private rent deposits to be registered.

Onshore wind energy guidance consultation extended
The deadline for members of the public to share their views on The Highland Council's new Onshore Wind Energy Supplementary Guidance has been extended to Friday 22 May.  Once approved, this guidance will be used for determining planning applications for wind energy development in Highland.

Highland Businesses warned about 'Data Control' Scam
The Highland Council's Trading Standards team are warning local businesses about a scam that is currently doing the rounds and is targeting small businesses within the Highland area.   A number of complaints have been received from local businesses receiving a letter headed "UK - DATA CONTROL - Missing information about your VAT Registration Number" with ‘Scotland Business' prominently stated at the top of the first page.

Highland Council Trading Standards are aware that Scam postcards are being delivered to residents' homes claiming that a parcel containing "jewellery" or valuables up to £50 is waiting for the homeowner.   The message on the postcard states: "The office is attempting to reach you.
