Thirteen Highland Young people have been presented with a Young Quality Scot Award in recognition of the volunteer work they carry out in their communities. Their achievements included involvement in youth forums and parliaments, volunteering in the community, cultural and citizenship projects and sporting achievements.

The awards have gone to - McLain Carter, Grantown Grammar; Kirsty Turnbull and Alishya McStay, Kingussie High School; Katie Munro, Paul Reyes and Stacey MacDonald, Millburn Academy; Calum MacDonald, Charleston Academy; Cameron Maclennan, Glenurquhart High School; Brianella Scott, Dornoch Academy; Tom Foot, Invergordon Academy; Fraser Thomson, Cromarty; Roxanne Ramsay, Gairloch High School; Martin Mackinnon, Broadford.

In February they all took part in a local event at Badaguish Outdoor Centre near Aviemore, which included interactive workshops on team building, communication, leadership and presentation skills. This was also an opportunity to get to know each other and create their own personal presentation on what it's like to be young in Highland.

This presentation was then performed at the National event in Irvine, hosted by North Ayrshire Council, where the Highland Young people gave a very proud and touching account of themselves in front of over 100 other participants. This was followed by a civic reception and the final presentation of certificates the next day.

The awards are a partnership between Quality Scotland and local councils across Scotland.

Chairman of The Council's Education, Culture and Sport Committee, Councillor Bill Fernie praised the successful award winners. He said: "These young people have taken the initiative to help people around them and their willingness to do good work in their local communities and spend their free time thinking of others should be an inspiration to us all. They are all very worthy winners of this national award and I would like to congratulate all of them on their success."
