HIE plans to invest over £220m into local economy
HIE plans to invest over £220m into local economy over the next three years Plans to invest more than £220 million over the next three years in economic and community development have been published by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE). The enterprise agency’s latest operating plan – its first since transferring business advice services to local authorities on 1 April 2009 – details HIE’s contribution to deliver the Scottish Government’s Economic Strategy in the Highlands and Islands.26/5/2009
Inspection of Dornoch Academy and the learning community surrounding the school
As part of the inspectorate's new joined-up strategy for evaluating all of the educational provision of local authorities, separate reports are issued today on the inspection by HMIe of the quality of education at Dornoch Academy and community learning and development (CLD) in the surrounding area. In a very positive school report, HMIe highlight well behaved and well-motivated pupils, imaginative and well-planned curricular provision, support for vulnerable young people, commitment of all staff and the leadership of the head teacher as particular strengths.8/5/2009
Highland student secures Geographical study trip of a lifetime
A Dornoch Academy student is heading off around the world to help her studies after winning £4000 of support from the Royal Geographical Society-IBG's Learning and Leading Gap Year Programme. Seventeen year old Lynn Munro from Spinningdale in Sutherland has been selected to become one of only twelve students across the UK to receive a grant to undertake a geographical themed Gap Year anywhere in the world.

Council reduces speeds at three more Highland Schools
From Tuesday 5 May, 2009, three more schools in the Highlands will have part time 20 mph speed limits in operation for children's' safety. The new limits are being introduced at Tongue Primary, Sutherland and at Bualnaluib Primary, Aultbea and Inverasdale Primary in Ross.30/4/2009

Older People To Be Treated In the Community In Sutherland
NHS Highland is continuing to develop the range of services it provides in Sutherland so that more people can be treated and cared for in their own homes. The Cambusavie Unit, at the Lawson Memorial Hospital, in Golspie, was purpose built as a 30 bed long-term facility in 1989, when patients were transferred from the old Cambusavie Hospital.25/3/2009

Council Confirms Commitment to Develop Tourism In The Highlands
A new partnership agreement between The Highland Council and VisitScotland for 2009/10 could see the Council contributing up to £445,000 to be used to promote the Highlands as a top tourism destination. Last May Members agreed to support a review of the existing agreement with VisitScotland and although the final report will not be available until the end of the Month at last week's Planning, Environment and Development Committee the Council confirmed its commitment to develop Highland Tourism in partnership with the business sector, VisitScotland, EventScotland and HIE.25/3/2009
LEADER Funds Start To Filter Through
Since the launch of the Highland LEADER Programme in excess of £400,000 of funding has already been allocated to 27 successful local projects and plans across the Highlands. Thanks to funding of £3,280 from both the Skye, and the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh LEADER Area Partnerships the Skye & Lochalsh Council for Voluntary Organisations is now able to organise, deliver and evaluate a capacity building event aimed at benefiting community groups in Skye and Wester Ross.28/2/2009
New Toilet Block Opened at Golspie
A new public convenience has opened in Golspie, providing local residents and visitors alike with modern surroundings. The Highland Council has invested £286,000 in the facility on the Main Street that includes male, female, disabled toilet units and an attendant's store.

Council Supports UHI Centre For History Development
Members of The Highlands Council's Resources Committee have pledged their support to the development of a UHI Centre for History at Dornoch. Councillors unanimously agreed to commit £200,000 in the current financial year (2008/09) from the Council's uncommitted Capital Discretionary Fund - subject to conditions to be agreed by the Director of Finance and the Head of Legal Services.21/1/2009
Tongue School tree-mendous planting effort
As part of the 'Communities Project for Highland Biodiversity,' P4 to P7 pupils from Tongue Primary School in North Sutherland recently (Mon 12th Jan) had fun planting twenty young native trees, complete with deer guards and wooden stakes. The children worked very hard assisted by Paul Castle the Highland Council Planning and Development Countryside Ranger.

Highland Hunting Lodge In Sutherland Set For Extensive Upgrade
A Victorian hunting lodge in Sutherland is to get a £1.5m facelift to allow a variety of uses including use as luxury accommodation and use for corporate events, thanks to a funding package including Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) together with the Big Lottery Fund. Community group The Assynt Foundation near Lochinver has been awarded £250,000 by HIE and £785,000 by the Big Lottery Growing Fund Community Assets towards a £1.5 million project to renovate Glencanisp Lodge.

£18 Million To Improve Waste Performance
The drive to make Scotland a Zero Waste society today received a further boost with the distribution of almost £18 million to local authorities. The investment, which will aim to improve recycling rates and cut the amount of waste going to landfill, comes from the Scottish Government's Zero Waste Fund for 2008/09.22/12/2008
Good News For Customers As Agreement On Flooding Insurance Reached
A joint agreement on flooding reached between the Scottish Government and the insurance industry will give homes and businesses greater protection Environment Minister Michael Russell said today. The Scottish Government and the Association of British Insurers (ABI) have agreed to work together to minimise the flood risks and to help people quicker when flooding occurs.21/12/2008
SNH confirms total £35,000 funding for environmental projects in Sutherland
Environmental projects in Sutherland are set to benefit from a £20,000 SNH grant for the Sutherland Partnership which will oversee a new assistance fund. The Sutherland Environmental Fund will operate over three years from spring 2009 with the themes of involvement and biodiversity.21/12/2008

A new draft of the Local Plan for Sutherland has been published and is currently open for consultation.
