3378 Volunteers Cleaned Up Highland
Keep Scotland Beautiful mobilised 3,378 volunteers to clean up Highland as part of Scotland's National Spring Clean.   2,612 children and 766 adults from Highland were amongst 117,734 volunteers from across Scotland who gave their time between 1 April and 31 May to support National Spring Clean, run by Scotland's leading charity for the environment, Keep Scotland Beautiful.

One-off transitional payment to GREAN to switch focus of community enterprise
The Highland Council has agreed a one-off payment of £160,000 to Golspie Recycling Environmental Action Network to assist the social enterprise to switch its focus from household recycling to a vegetable box delivery scheme.   Over the years, the Council has provided GREAN with funding support to collect household recycling materials.

Clamp Down On Litterers During National Day Of Action
The Highland Council and Northern Constabulary joined ranks today (Thursday 7 June) to take part in a Litter Day of Action to highlight the blight littering has on the environment and to crack down on people caught discarding their rubbish irresponsibly.   The day started with a visit to Millburn Academy in Inverness to talk to pupils about their views on littering and discuss ways of working together to promote the anti-litter message.

Highlands & Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant asked the Scottish Executive what funding it would provide for improvements to the A9 at Berridale Braes and what timeframe it had set for such improvements to take place.   In response the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Keith Brown MSP, intimated that the total cost of the works was around £250,000 and Transport Scotland had confirmed a £100,000 contribution towards the works following confirmation from other funding partners.

Highlands and Islands Workforce Attracting Global Interest From Business Services Sector
With business service companies actively recruiting across the region the Head of Inward Investment at Highlands and Islands Enterprise says that the skills and reputation of the region's workforce is attracting strong interest from global investors.   Following last week's announcement of a further 30 jobs in Moray with Capita, Sensée, which is the leading UK-based provider of employed home-based advisers for contact centres, is hoping to fill 45 positions from across the region.  
Northern Constabulary Achieves Highest Ever Detection Rate
The first meeting of the new Northern Joint Police Board members heard today that Northern Constabulary achieved the highest ever detection rate by the Force last year and remains one of the highest performing Forces in the UK.   The detection rate stood at 67% (class 1 to 5) by the end of an extremely busy year from April 2011-12 and 4% up on the previous year.

Police urge drivers not to spoil the party by drinking and driving as summer of events approaches.   Drivers in the Highlands and Islands are being urged not to spoil the party this summer by getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.

Have you had a closer look at your local café's table decorations or at what else may be on the shelves in your shop lately? If you live on the north coast of Scotland, it might be worth a look, as Strathnaver Museum's artist-in-residence, Joanne B Kaar, has been inspired to make 200 paper shoes and hide them in mail boxes and public places from Balnakeil to John O'Groats.  She made the shoe drop last week.

Accommodation Providers Wanted
The Highland Council is looking for accommodation providers to come forward with rooms that can be used to provide temporary accommodation for homeless people.   Approximately 1300 households approached The Highland Council last year as homeless.

Highland Schools And Communities Celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee
Schools and local communities in the Highlands are celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in a variety of ways over this weekend and the rest of June.   From the Castle of Mey in Caithness to Arisaig and Portree to Nairn, at tea parties, beach parties, and barbeques bunting will be flying throughout the Highlands.

Linda's new role as Champions' Co-ordinator and Children's Champion
The Highland Council has appointed Councillor Linda Munro from North West and Central Sutherland, to the new role of Champions' Co-ordinator and Children's Champion.   The Council's Administration intends to appoint other champions - such as for carers and for older people - and Councillor Munro will have a co-ordinating role in promoting support for these important areas of work.

Council Agree New Committee Structure and Office-bearers
The Highland Council has agreed a new committee structure and elected office-bearers.   There will be four strategic committees, namely: Finance, Housing and Resources; Planning Environment and Development; Transport Environmental and Community Services and Adult and Children's Services.

National recognition for beaches in Highland
Twelve Highland beaches have been given the coveted Seaside Award by the country's leading charity for the environment, Keep Scotland Beautiful.   The award, given annually, recognises high standards of cleanliness, safety, and water quality.

Over the next few weeks new blue recycling wheelie bins are to be delivered to all households in Sutherland, along with details of the new refuse and recycling service.  Households in parts of Sutherland which saw a four-weekly blue bin recycling service introduced in 2009 and so already have the bins, will be delivered new calendars and guides.

The Caithness & North Sutherland Fund recently awarded its 2nd round of grants for 2012 to community projects totalling £101,342.   Six groups in Caithness and two groups in the North Sutherland area have been awarded funding for projects that help to improve the attractiveness of their area as a place to live, work and invest.

Attention Contractors - Highland Council Renewing Its Contractors Framework
The Highland Council is currently in the process of renewing its Contractors Framework agreement which will be used by Highland Council Services for selecting contractors to carry out all construction works up to the value of £50,000.   The Contractors Frame work is changing from £25k to £50k This new agreement, which will commence on the 3rd September 2012, will in effect cover a three year programme of work but will be re-opened and re-advertised at six monthly intervals to provide the opportunity for new contractors to apply.

Test Purchase Volunteers Sought
The Highland Council's Trading Standards are seeking young people to help them to check that businesses are not selling age-restricted products to those under the minimum age.   Leaflets produced in association with NHS Highland are being sent out to all Highland Council secondary schools, encouraging young people aged between 15½ and 16½ years old to volunteer to visits shops in the Highlands and carry out test purchases of age-restricted products such as cigarettes, solvents, fireworks, DVD movies and games.  
Farm Watch Scheme In Sutherland
Successful Farm Watch scheme is rolled out in Caithness, Sutherland and East Ross.   Northern Constabulary is delighted to announce the roll out of the successful Farm Watch initiative to the Caithness, Sutherland and Ross-shire areas.
