Community asset transfers approved by Councillors - Bettyhill Visitor Centre

Two Highland communities have had their requests for buildings to be transferred over to them approved by The Highland Council At todays (Thursday 16 May 2019) Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee members agreed to transfer the Bettyhill Visitor Centre to the Strathnaver Museum, creating an opportunity for an enhanced cultural heritage and community "hub" in the far north.   Until recently the Visitor Centre with a cafe, situated next to the Strathnaver Museum, was run by Visit Scotland.

Final Beatrice Turbine Commissioned - Number 84

The last of 84 offshore wind turbines was commissioned on 15th May 2019 which has been completed on time and under budget after three years of construction.   The final 7MW Siemens Gamesa turbine was installed in the Outer Moray Firth, around 13km off the coast of Caithness, bringing the site's total installed capacity to 588MW - enough to provide clean, low carbon energy to over 450,000 homes.

Highland Council Confirms Commitment To Food For Life

Already leading the way when it comes to providing nutritional school meals, The Highland Council has reaffirmed its commitment to put more local fresh seasonal food on school dinner plates.   Catherine Pendreigh, Food for Life Partnerships Manager at the Soil Association gave a presentation at today's Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee on the accreditation already awarded to Highland Council's school meals and how this could be further developed in the future.

Town Centre Funding Of £198,967 For Sutherland

Members of The Highland Council's Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee have welcomed new funding to stimulate economic investments in Highland town centres to help them diversify and flourish.   In partnership with COSLA The Scottish Government have provided £50m capital to set up the Town Centre Fund 2019-2020.

Contract Awarded To Design Sutherland Spaceport

Architects have been appointed to design the spaceport that is being developed to launch small satellites from the Highlands.   Development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is leading the £17.5m Space Hub Sutherland project, including a £2.5m grant from the UK Space Agency (UKSA).

Sutherland pupils lend-a-hand with Farr Primary and High school improvements

When a £1M school improvement project got underway at Farr Primary and High schools in Sutherland, nine pupils in primaries 1 to 3 got the chance to roll their sleeves up and have-a-go at painting their new general purpose room.   Councillor John Finlayson, Chair of The Highland Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee said: "I am very pleased that contractor Morgan Sindall has recently completed capital programme works for Highland Council's school improvement programme at Farr in Sutherland.

New Keep Safe locations in the Highlands

Police Scotland and the I Am Me charity have welcomed new members to the network of Highland premises which have agreed to make their premises a Keep Safe place for people to go if they feel frightened, distressed or have been the victim of crime.   Nairn Citizens Advice Bureau and the Co-ops in Golspie and Brora have joined the initiative, which is delivered in partnership between I Am Me and Police Scotland.

Pre Planning Application For New Wind Farm At Rogart

Wind 2 Ltd per Atmos Consulting Ltd have applied.   Proposed wind turbine development comprising up to seven wind turbines with tip height up to 149.9m, including access tracks, a substation, energy storage systems and other related ancillary components including temporary construction compound and on site borrow pits.

BT Group contributes £1.2bn to Scottish economy

BT Group is responsible for generating £1 in every £110 produced in the Scottish economy, according to an independent report published today.   ‘The Economic Impact of BT Group plc in the UK' report, by Hatch Regeneris, shows that the communications company generated an £1.2bn contribution - expressed as "Gross Value Added" (GVA)* - to the Scottish economy during the 2017/18 financial year.

Over 93% Of Taxpayers File Tax Returns By The Deadline

A total of 93.68% of Self Assessment tax returns - a new record - were completed by yesterday's midnight deadline, HMRC has revealed.   More than 11.5 million taxpayers were required to file their 2017/18 tax returns by 11.59pm on 31 January.

Public opinion sought on Golspie Flood Protection Study

The Highland Council has invited people in Golspie to attend a public exhibition highlighting results from an ongoing study into the risk of flooding along the Golspie coast, including potential options to mitigate the risk of future coastal flooding in Golspie.   The exhibition on Thursday 31st January from 2-7pm at Golspie Community Centre, 2 Back Rd, Golspie KW10 6RN will present results of the study to date following detailed hydraulic modelling of the coastal flood mechanisms that affect Golspie, and outline potential options being considered to mitigate the risk of future coastal flooding.

Melvich Primary School Reaps the Benefits of New Campus

The Vice Chair of The Highland Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee has congratulated Melvich Primary School near Thurso on their inspection report by Education Scotland.   Councillor John Finlayson said: "I would like to extend my congratulations to the Head Teacher Katherine Wood and her staff and all the pupils as well as the whole school community on what is a very positive outcome for them all." In its inspection report published on Tuesday, 4 December 2018, Education Scotland made reference to a number of Melvich Primary School's strengths.

Lorna Simpson is named Participation Officer of the Year

A Highland Council employee, nominated by the tenants she works with, has scooped a national award.   Lorna Simpson from Wick has been a Tenant Participation Officer with The Highland Council for the past ten years, covering Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.

Another Moray Firth Wind Farm Gets Go Ahead

A proposed objection to a massive Moray Firth wind project by Highland Council did not take place as planned.   Highland council planning officers had intimated that the council would lay an objection to the north planning applications committee and it was stated in the papers the week before but the objection was not put.
