Businesses and organisations are being encouraged to apply for funding through the Highland & Moray Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) as part of the European Maritime & Fisheries Fund. Funding can be used to support a wide range of projects that will boost the local economy and create jobs within the fishing, aquaculture and maritime industries including tourism and seafood sectors.
Sutherland County Committee members gave their backing to Dornoch Area Community Interest Company's (DACICA) proposal to create a Community Development Manager Post. DACIC was set up in 2007 as a voluntary organisation to enhance and develop the economy and community of the Sutherland town.
Members of the Sutherland County Committee have agreed a two year Housing Revenue Account Capital Programme that will see over £2m invested into improving council homes over the next 2 years. In addition, a further £134,000 will be spent specifically on providing aids and adaptations to assist tenants requiring extra support.
The priorities by which The Highland Council will grit roads across Sutherland this winter have been approved by Councillors. Twenty three gritters and 4 footpath tractors all with dedicated routes are on standby to treat a road network of 534km primary routes (40%), 248km of secondary routes (19%) and 554km of other routes (41%) in the area.

Local services throughout Scotland could be plunged into crisis after - UNISON, Unite and the GMB - wrote to COSLA to say they will recommend their members reject their revised pay offer when they consult them in the coming weeks. The revised pay offer, made by COSLA on 6th September 2018, was a 3% increase for all local government workers earning up to £80,000, but the trade unions are angry that this is below inflation and does not improve low pay.
The Highland Council's Environmental Health team has identified raised levels of naturally occurring algal toxins following routine monitoring at Loch Eriboll and Kyle of Durness. Eating shellfish such as cockles, mussels, oysters or razor fish from these areas may pose a health risk arising from the consumption of these algal toxins.
Members of The Highland Council's Care, Learning and Housing Committee have agreed for the Council to conduct a statutory consultation on a proposal to discontinue the provision of education at Altnaharra Primary School and to formally close the school. In a report to committee, Councillors were informed that the school has been mothballed since February 2017 and that there are no prospective pupils in the foreseeable future, and no long term prospect of the school having a viable roll.
