Consultations commence on a review of the Highland-Wide Local Development Plan, Onshore Wind Energy Guidance and the Local Housing Strategy. The Highland Council has today launched three online consultations on planning and housing issues across the area, including a review of its main planning policy document the Highland-wide Local Development Plan.
LP Gas users in Scotland are being urged to stay safe this winter by ensuring their appliances have been checked and serviced to prevent gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. UKLPG, the trade association for the liquefied petroleum gas (LP Gas) industry, has issued the warning as part of Gas Safety Week (14-21 September), the annual awareness event co-ordinated by the Gas Safe Register.
At a meeting held on 16th September 2015 of the Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee, councillors approved funding to a project to improve disabled access to St Andrew's Church of Scotland in Golspie. The church, built between 1737 and 1739 to replace a succession of churches which have stood on the site since the thirteenth century, is a well- used local place of worship, considered by many to be the finest small Post Reformation country church in Scotland.
At a meeting of The Highland Council on 3 September 2015 it was agreed to replace the Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee with two new Local Forums so the meeting of the Committee, held in Golspie on 16th september 2015, was the final one. East Sutherland and Edderton Councillor Deirdre Mackay has chaired the Area Committee since its first meeting in Golspie on 20 August 2012 and took the opportunity today to thank members, officers and partners for their contributions and to look ahead to new arrangements for local decision-making, local scrutiny and engaging with partners and communities.
Pupils at two Sutherland and two Caithness primary schools are to benefit from projects being delivered by The Highland Council through the Scottish Government's Cycling, Walking and Safer Streets (CWSS) programme. Members of The Highland Council’s Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee have given their approval for £39,965 CWSS funding for projects at Gledfield, Lochinver, Castletown and Canisbay Primaries.
UNISON fears that over 3,000 jobs - one in every six Edinburgh council staff and three times as many jobs as first thought- will be slashed as the effects of accelerated budget cuts become clear. This will put the council's and the Scottish Government's no compulsory redundancy pledge at risk.
Highland (Scottish Labour) MSP, Rhoda Grant is hailing Helmsdale station as a "shining example" of the potential to improve stations and the passenger experience along the length of the far north line connecting Caithness, Sutherland and Ross with the Highland capital. Last month Helmsdale Station Community Interest Company, set up in 2009 to rescue and restore the listed station building at Helmsdale as a community project announced that volunteers behind the renovation had been shortlisted for an award under the caring and protecting category at the inaugural Scottish Heritage Angel Awards, to take place in Edinburgh on the 28th September, funded by the Andrew Llyod Webber Foundation.

Highland Council residents can now apply for Council Tax discounts and exemptions and report change of circumstances online with the launch of new online forms on the Council's website. The new forms allow customers to complete online rather than by paper when applying for council tax discounts/exemptions and to report changes that may impact on their council tax, housing benefit or council tax reduction.
Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, is outraged at a response from Minister of State, Andrea Leadsom MP, in which she not only gives little detail on progress being made on the Lewis interconnector but she also appears unwilling to look at national pricing for electricity network charges. Mrs Grant and her colleague, David Stewart MSP, had written to Amber Rudd MP, the new Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, last month about the Western Isles link and asked her to address the matter of the 2p surcharge on electricity which Highlands and Islands customers are charged for their network.
A primary school in the Highlands is looking forward to starting term time with a fresh outlook, thanks to a team from Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission). The public is being asked for its views on proposals by The Highland Council to review the maximum level of charges for the hire of taxis or private hire cars fitted with taxi meters operating under licence of The Highland Council. The Council has a statutory duty in terms of Section 17 of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 to review its scales for the fares and other taxi related charges every 18 months.

Highland MSP, David Stewart has expressed his "deep concern" over low levels of private rented sector deposits that are registered with a Tenancy Deposit Scheme, which is required under legislation, in the Highlands. Figures revealed by SafeDeposits Scotland who take on average 60% of the Tenancy Deposit Market show that only 61% of landlords across Scotland are complying with legislation which requires private rent deposits to be registered.
The deadline for members of the public to share their views on The Highland Council's new Onshore Wind Energy Supplementary Guidance has been extended to Friday 22 May. Once approved, this guidance will be used for determining planning applications for wind energy development in Highland.
