The importance of supporting environmentally, economically and socially sustainable aquaculture development in the Highlands was under the spotlight at yesterday's Planning, Development and Infrastructure Committee. Members agreed a pre-consultation draft supplementary guidance on Aquaculture which, will eventually be used to determine future planning applications.
Councils using toolkit and investing in LED lighting will pay less for electricity in 25 years time than they do now. As the cost of electricity is set to double over the next ten years, an easy-to-use toolkit has been launched to give Scotland's local authorities real-time information on how many millions they would save by phasing in energy efficient LED street lights.
The new Rector at Dornoch Academy is Miss Tina Stones, who was appointed on Thursday 5 February at the 258 pupil school. Miss Stones has been Acting Rector at Dornoch Academy since October 2014, prior to which she was Depute Head Teacher at Culloden Academy, in Inverness since 2005, when she moved to The Highland Council area.
A study has shown that the 2014 Royal National Mòd generated £3,547,661 to the business community in Inverness - over a £1million more than the event target. Between Thursday 29th January and Sunday 1st February 2015, a premises was entered on Acadamy Place, Brora and damaged was caused to a vintage vehicle. Between 2000 hours on Saturday 31st January and 1100 hours on Sunday 1st February the tyres of two vehicles parked in a private driveway on Victoria Road, Brora were damaged.

Early in February the first two in a series of workshops specifically for anyone working in the local food and drink sector will take place to highlight how social media can be best used to increase profit, support other local businesses and promote the area. Paper and can banks are to be phased out of The Highland Council's network of Recycling Points during February and March. On 22 January 2015 twelve S1 pupils from Golspie High School will be the first in Sutherland to become Junior Wardens as part of a joint project between the school, The Highland Council and High Life Highland. The Junior Warden Scheme aims to provide an alternative and creative way to engage with young people and community groups, promote positive behaviour and encourage active involvement in the local community.

The importance placed by the Council of the North West Highlands Geopark, both in terms of protecting the unique geography and heritage, as well as promoting the area as a top geo-tourism destination, was apparent last week when it was the first item on the agenda for the Caithness and Sutherland Area Committee. The North West Highlands Geopark covers 2000 square kilometres of North West Sutherland and Coigach where about 2000 people live.

Remember to use your blue bin for all paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, food tins and drink cans (no glass or plastic bags - everything should be loose, dry and clean).
The Highland Council has been taking action to reduce radon in nine properties which include five schools. Testing earlier in the year showed all properties had radon above the statutory Action Level of 400 Bq/m³.
With the approach of the festive season, multi-agency partners have once again joined forces to support Operation Respect with the aim of making the streets of Inverness safer for shoppers and party goers, both day and night, during the festive season. SSE'S networks business, SHE Transmission, has awarded its largest ever Living Wage contract - worth £460million - to engineering firm ABB Limited. The contract is part of the Caithness to Moray Transmission Project, the vital new subsea link which will allow more renewable energy to join up to the network in the north of Scotland.
