New Planning Manager For Sutherland
The Highland Council has appointed a new Planning and Building Standards Manager for Sutherland.   He is Allan Todd, Team Leader, Development Control, with the Planning and Development Service at Council Headquarters, Inverness.

Tourism Gets Active
The second phase of the European-funded 'HIE Activity' scheme is well under way across the Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) network area.   'HIE Activity 2', which was approved by the Highlands and Islands Partnership Programme on the 1st of February this year (2005), runs until the end of June 2006.

Highlands And Islands Enterprise Launch New Strategy
The Highlands and Islands Enterprise network (HIE), today (Friday June 17), launched its new strategy 'A Smart Successful Highlands and Islands'.   The document, which spells out HIE's objectives over the coming three to five years, is published in both English and Gaelic and is available online at Highlands And Islands Enterprise Network Strategy,or from any HIE network office.

Assynt Community Buy Back Their Land - 44,400 Acres
Assynt Foundation is set to take over the Glencanisp and Drumrunie estates from the Vestey family, bringing the land into community ownership.  The 44,400 acre estates, in Sutherland and Wester Ross, include the iconic mountains of Canisp, Suilven, Cul Mor and Cul Beg and many beautiful lochs.

HIE Network Announces Results For 2004 - 05
The economy of the Highlands and Islands is continuing to improve, with unemployment showing a steady downward trend while population levels are rising.   That was the message today (Thursday 26 May) from William Roe, chairman of Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Business Learning Accounts
Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE) has announced the introduction of Business Learning Accounts (BLAs), targeting small businesses in the area.   Businesses across other parts of the Highlands have already used BLAs to broaden their product range, to establish a market for new crops, for specialised survey training and to diversify and establish sector "best practice".

Graduate Fair At Thurso - 7 April 2005
FAIR WAY TO SUCCESS Following the success of a pilot event last year, graduates and employers in Caithness and Sutherland are once again to be given the opportunity to meet and discuss mutual benefits.   The second Graduate Fair will take place in Thurso Town Hall, on Thursday 7th April, from 4pm - 7pm.

Three New Board Members For CASE
The board of Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE) has been strengthened with the appointment of three new directors, who attended their first board meeting this week (Tuesday 1st March).   Joining the Local Enterprise Company's board are Steve Burness, Alexander Murray and Iain Young.

Jennifer Means Business With Her Music
A young Sutherland musician has returned to her home village and set up business thanks to assistance from her local enterprise company.   Jennifer Port from Golspie is to receive start up assistance of £3,600 from Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE) towards establishing her business, where she will combine her skills as both a performance artist and a musical tutor.

SAC Single Farm Payment Meetings in HIE AREA
SAC is organising a series of meetings throughout the Highlands and Islands which aim to help farmers and crofters understand how the new Single Farm Payment Scheme works.  The meetings will take place over the next six weeks (see below for times and venues) prior to the deadline for IACS applications on 16 May 2005.

Private Property Leasing Scheme - Do You Have Property To Let?
COUNCIL ENCOURAGED WITH RESPONSE TO PRIVATE PROPERTY LEASING SCHEME Highland Council's Housing Service has been greatly encouraged by its public appeal earlier this month to private property owners to consider leasing their properties to the Council.   Members and officials have welcomed the response from 24 people from throughout the Highlands who have contacted Housing staff to enquire about the Council's private leasing scheme.

Caspian Shellfish Expansion
A Sutherland shellfish company who partially moved from creel fishing to mussel farming in 2003 have been so encouraged by the potential of their new venture that they are now turning their full attention to mussel farming.   Caspian Shellfish, owned by Charles and Annette Mackay and Graeme Gunn, is expanding to increase their production of mussels to meet the increasing demand both in Scotland and throughout Europe.

Taxi Increases To Take Effect From 10 January 2005
A 5% increase in taxi fares throughout the Highlands will come into force from Monday 10 January 2005.   The Highland Council has been able to confirm the increase following rejection of an appeal to Richard Hamilton McFarlane, Deputy Traffic Commissioner in the Scottish Traffic Area, that the increase was inadequate.

£100,000 Boost To South Bonar Industrial Estate
The Convener of The Highland Council, Councillor Alison Magee, has welcomed the award of a £100,000 grant from the Scottish Executive which will help open up land at the South Bonar Industrial Estate for local business development.   The grant will enable the Council to remediate land at the former petrol filling station at South Bonar, removing derelict storage tanks and associated infrastructure.

The Sutherland Business Index has now undergone the largest part of its new facelift.   Everything from the old site has been upgraded to the new look and updates received over the last 2 years are being dealt with today.

The chairman of Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise (CASE), Pat Buchanan, long with chief executive Carroll Buxton, welcomed three new directors to the local enterprise company's board yesterday (Tuesday 14th December).   The three new members are David Halpin, who lives in Dornoch; Willie Calder from Thurso and Nick Gorton, based in Lochinver.
