Prestigious EatSafe Award for the Wayfarer Restaurant in Helmsdale

A Sutherland restaurant owner, who has worked in the trade for only two years, has won a prestigious award for demonstrating a high degree of excellence in food hygiene and food safety in the running of her business.   Anne Kane, of The Wayfarer Restaurant, Dunrobin Street, Helmsdale, has won the Food Standards Agency award for excellence ~ EatSafe ~ by operating her premises at a level over and above current legislative requirements.

Sutherland Project In Enterprising Britain 2007 Final

Two Highland projects reach Enterprising Britain 2007 final.   A nationwide competition to find the most enterprising place in the UK will announce the Scottish finalist at an awards ceremony tomorrow (Wednesday 23 May 2007) at the Dakota Hotel, Bellshill, Glasgow.

Market Development Scheme Worth £9.2 Million In Food And Drink Sales

Highlands and Islands food and drink producers have attributed £9.2 million of new sales to events and exhibitions organised by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), through its UK Market Development programme.   A recent evaluation of the programme commissioned by HIE has demonstrated that bringing together food and drink producers and buyers is an effective way for speciality companies in the Highlands and Islands to do business.

"Health Warning" for Local Businesses

Big-hearted local businesses in the Highlands, who are approached to help fund the production of health-related leaflets and booklets for primary schools, are being urged to sponsor only material that has the endorsement of The Highland Council and NHS Highland.   The advice from the agencies follows concerns from some head teachers that leaflets, sponsored by local companies and sent to schools by commercial entities, have contained materials that are outdated, misleading, inaccurate and inappropriate for the target age group.

Dornoch Service Point Official Opening

Dornoch Service Point was officially opened today enabling customers to access The Highland Council front line services, Sheriff Court services and Tourist Information services from the one building.   The new partnership has seen the Council's current Dornoch Service Point relocating from The Meadows to the centre of Dornoch to serve its customers from the Sheriff Court building.

Head Teachers in Caithness are concerned that local businesses may be approached to sponsor books.   The schools know nothing about these approaches by a company selling the books.

Five teams of talented young entrepreneurs from schools in the Highlands have impressed judges from some of the country's leading businesses this week to make it through to the final stage of the ICT Youth Challenge.   Sixteen teams of budding young entrepreneurs travelled to the Horizon Scotland, Forres on Tuesday this week where they pitched their ideas for the information communication and technology products of the future.

Work Starts on Final Phase of North Coast Road

Work began this week on the £3.4 million final phase of upgrading the A 836 North Coast road, between Melvich ~ Strathy, Sutherland.   The Highland Council has awarded a 40-week contract to Highland Quality Construction to build 3.4 kilometres of modern two-lane carriageway at Melvich, which will include two new bridges and environmentally friendly features, such as otter culverts.

Replica of Helmsdale Memorial 'The Emigrants' Heading For Canada

A replica of the 30 foot bronze statue commemorating the Highland Clearances is being cast and shipped to the Canadian City of Winnipeg.   'The Emigrants' memorial in the Sutherland town of Helmsdale was originally cast by Highland foundry Black Isle Bronze in 2003.

Challenge gives pupils taste for careers in food industry

Dornoch Academy pupils have been given a taste of running their own business over the past few weeks, by creating a new ice cream.   The pupils have been working with Harry Gow and Highland Fine Cheeses on a Food and Drink School's Challenge, which culminates in a final event on Saturday 15 March for 12 S3 pupils from the school.

Enterprising Britain 2007 Competition

The search is on to find Scotland's enterprise champions, with the launch of the DTI's Enterprising Britain 2007 competition today.  This year's competition was launched by Industry and Regions Minister Margaret Hodge and took place in West Kilbride, the winner of last year's hotly contested competition.
